The leading one in radio astronomy is the construction of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA),1,2 a project for an interferometer aimed at the study of microwave and sub-millimeter signals coming from space. ALMA is expected to operate in the 30 to 950 GHz band, subdivided into ten sub-bands. It will comprise sixty-four dual reflector antennas that will be located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. This millimeter and sub-millimeter instrument will be very helpful in the study of some major challenges in modern astrophysics: the formation and evolution of galaxies and quasars in the early universe and the formation of stars and planets. Due to the excellent atmospheric transparency at the site, the efficiency of the receiving system is of utmost importance; hence, ELECTROFORMED FRONT-END AT 100 GHZ FOR RADIO-ASTRONOMICAL APPLICATIONS

A calibrated digital sideband separating spectrometer for radio astronomy applications

Dual sideband (2SB) receivers are well suited for the spectral observation of complex astronomical signals over a wide frequency range. They are extensively used in radio astronomy, their main advantages being to avoid spectral confusion and to diminish effective system temperature by a factor two with respect to double sideband (DSB) receivers. Using available millimeter-wave analog technology...

An Integrated 17 GHz Front-End for ISM/WLAN Applications in 0.13 μm CMOS

This paper presents an integrated front-end for ISM/WLAN applications at 17.3 GHz in 0.13 μm standard CMOS. The front-end chip includes an inductive source-degenerated low noise amplifier (LNA), a transformer-based Gilbert-mixer, an intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier and a buffer for the local oscillator (LO) input. The integrated receiver front-end achieves a gain of 34.7 dB, a SSB noise fi...

A 1-v 2.4-ghz Double-quadrature Receiver Front-end for Low-voltage Applications

Recently, battery-operated wireless communication systems with low power consumption and high sustainability on operating time for batteries have wide applications. In these systems, low-power CMOS RF ICs are the key components for achieving system performance goals. One effective means of reducing power dissipation is to decrease supply voltage. Moreover, as CMOS technology moves below 100 nm,...

Compact Dual-band Slot Antenna for 2.4/5 Ghz Wlan Applications

This paper presents a compact dual-band slot antenna for 2.4/5 GHz WLAN applications. The radiating elements of the proposed antenna are composed of a square ring slot and a circular ring slot, operating at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands respectively. The antenna size is very compact (40 mm × 40 mm × 1 mm), and can be integrated easily with other RF front-end circuits. It is demonstrated that the prop...

Design of a Very Low-power, Low-cost 60 GHz Receiver Front-End Implemented in 65 nm CMOS Technology

The research on the design of receiver front-ends for very high data-rate communication in the 60 GHz band in nanoscale CMOS technologies is going on for some time now. While a multitude of 60 GHz front-ends have been published in recent years, they are not consequently optimized for low power consumption. Thus, these front-ends dissipate too much power for battery-powered applications like han...
